2019 Summer Reading Program

2019 Summer Reading Program

Registration begins Monday, June 17.
Weekly events each Tuesday, 1 p.m. at McChord Library and each Thursday 4 p.m. at Grandstaff Library. Grand Finale Party: McChord Library: August 6, Grandstaff/Book Patch: August 8. (For those who have received a Golden Ticket by completing 30 hours of reading).

Join Grandstaff, Book Patch and McChord libraries for an amazing summer filled with reading, fun, prizes and a party that rewards those who complete the program. Pick up your packets for the 2019 Summer Reading Program, “It’s Showtime at Your Library” starting Monday, June 17.
McChord is offering fun for all ages each week, Book Patch Library is offering weekly fun and activities for children and teens, and Grandstaff is catering to adults.
The benefits of summer reading are clear. National research finds that students who participate in library summer reading programs scored higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the next school year than those who did not participate. Even adults who join the summer reading program benefit by reading to their prereaders, showing tots how fun reading can be, plus reading books for their own pleasure.
Enjoy reading, fun & some really big prizes
Once you’ve registered at your library of choice, each time you complete 10 hours of reading (up to 30 hours), you’ll receive a prize. Once you’ve read 30 hours, you’ll be invited to a party at the end of the program at the location you’re attending. But that’s just for starters — you’re also invited to attend these events:
McChord kids summer of fun. Kiddos and parents can meet each Tuesday, June 25–July 30 at 1 p.m. for tons of free fun with visiting guests, such as Cool Science with the Pacific Science Center, Dr. Science with the Hands On Children’s Museum, Reptile Isle, Juggletunes, magician Brian Ledbetter and making marionettes. Kids who complete 30 hours of reading and attend at least five of six weekly McChord events will be entered to win a BB-8 remote-control robot.
Movie making for teens. Meet at McChord Library Tuesdays at 3 p.m. June 25–July 30 to learn how to produce a movie step-by-step. The teen movie will premiere Aug. 6 at the grand-finale party. If you’re a teen and complete your 30 hours of reading and attend at least five out of the six movie-making workshops, you’ll be entered to win a GoPro Hero7.
Book Patch’s fun and activities are Thursdays at 4 p.m. and include guest appearances by Juggletunes, Reptile Isle, comedian Bill Robison, falconer Brad Wood, magician Henrik Bothe, a double performance day with musician Eric Ode and SoundDown Seattle.
Book Bingo for adults. Adults who register at McChord or Grandstaff can also participate in Book Bingo all summer. Complete a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line to enter a drawing for one of several gift baskets. Complete all 25 squares to enter a drawing for the grand prize — a flat screen TV.
