Lifeguard Training

Get in on lifeguard training! Cost: FREE! Find out about lifeguard employment. We have opportunities for those who wish to become lifeguards at JBLM pools. To get paid for taking Lifeguard Training, you must apply as a Lifeguard Trainee first. Classes will be held on the following dates:

For the 3-day schedules, the class will be held Friday 1500-2000 and Saturday & Sunday 0800-1630.
For the 4-day schedules, the class will be held 0800-1530 both Saturdays and Sundays.

• MAY: 1-3, 15-17 (3-day schedules)
• JUN: 12-14, 26-28 (3-day schedules)
• JUL: 10-12 (3-day schedule)
• AUG: 8-9 & 15-16 (4-day schedule)
• SEP-NOV: No classes

In order to participate in a lifeguard certification course, all participants must successfully complete an in-water pretest followed by online coursework. Our lifeguards will proctor the pretest and the online work is provided by the American Red Cross.

• Interested candidates must reach out to staff at either Kimbro (253-967-5026) or Soldiers Field House pool (253-967-5390) to schedule the pretest (JBLMaquatics@army.mil).
• Once passed, they will receive an email link to begin the coursework.
• Pretest must be completed no later than one week prior to the certification course. The pretest consists of a 300-meter front crawl or breaststroke swim, a two-minute leg-only tread, and a timed brick retrieval.
• Online coursework (approximately seven hours) must be completed no later than 2 business days prior to the certification course.

The training includes a pocket mask and certification. Expect a physically strenuous class with skills work both in and out of the water.
