An official army family and MWR Site

COVID-19

Your health is our primary concern, and as such, masks are required in MWR locations.* JBLM continues to follow protection measures on base to keep service members, families, civilian employees and others safe. Customers and team members are asked to visit the nearest washroom to clean their hands before conducting business in our locations.

Any changes to facility and program operations will be shared here and on facebook as soon as updates are available.

*Masks are not required inside fitness centers during moderate or intense exercise; however, treadmills will not be available for use (effective July 27). At our eating establishments, customers may remove their mask once seated with their orders. At outdoor MWR locations, masks continue to be required when safe physical distancing standards cannot be met.

Basewide closures, postponements and cancellations can be seen here.

CHILD CARE

CYS continues to offer childcare based on the DOD Priority List -- currently placing all Single/Dual AD military (1C) and as many AD with working spouse (1D) as possible. CYS continues to evaluate incoming families at the 1C priority category.

As we head into the school year with a change in the DOD Priority List (effective 1 Sep) and continuing guidance from the CDC on total capacity, we want to ensure families understand the need to seek alternate care options. This will mostly affect DOD civilians (1E), as we no longer project to have space available for care for families in that category. DOD personnel are eligible for fee assistance for care off-base through Child Care Aware of America. We encourage these families needing immediate care to find a location off-base first that accepts a CCAoA subsidy and then come into Parent Central to receive a statement of non-availability/waiver to secure a childcare space off-base. We recommend seeking a location first that qualifies and then going through the process to obtain the waiver because waivers are valid for 10 days only. For more information, the CCoA website is childcareaware.org.

For incoming families, please ensure you get signed up on the CYS waitlist for care through militarychildcare.com. We are attempting to also place 1C (single and dual military families) as well. There are already 150 1C children on the waitlist, but this helps us to continually address need. Militarychildcare.com also requires families to update their need for care every 90 days. This requirement had been suspended, but will resume effective July 1, which means if you are on the waitlist, you should start to see emails from MCC and we ask that you update your status. Again, this helps CYS to have a better idea of childcare requirements at JBLM.

SCHOOL RESOURCES
My children are enrolled at a School Age Center and will need help with their schoolwork during the day. What is CYS doing to support their education?
Educating children is the responsibility of the school district; however, during these unprecedented times, CYS will partner with you and your child to ensure that your child's continued education is facilitated in a safe and healthy environment conducive to learning. The childcare teams at the SACs are preparing to assist students with remote learning. CYS staffers will do their best to facilitate your child's learning log-in (at the right time) and technical support; however, they will not be able to provide each child with individualized learning support. Each staff member is responsible for 10 children and will be trying to get each logged on to the right site at the right time. We also are working to increase our WiFi capacity, but we won't know things will look like until closer to when schools start (CPSD starts Sept. 2).

While school is offering remote learning, what services are available i.e.-counselors (MFLCs), school-provided breakfast/lunch programs etc.
For Clover Park School District: The remote learning that schools are beginning the year with will be class assigned by grade with a teacher. The students will get a schedule of times to sign on and meet with the teacher via the platform chosen. Students will be issued computer if they don't have one at home to conduct their studies. It will work much like it did in the Spring except with built in structure for assignment completion and grading. School teachers will be contacting parents towards the end of August for dates and times for equipment pickup. Remember things can change so keep checking the school website. MFLCs for those schools that have them will be conducting sessions virtually and principals will be sending out information on times and platform. In the past, they used the Zoom platform. Schools will provide breakfast and lunch pick up for those eligible at the school site or a designated site for students.

Schools: With many schools making decisions about what the beginning of the school year is going to look like, we know there are a lot of questions. We’re still working through those answers as well. A list of decisions made for the schools with highly impacted populations (there are 13 highly affected school districts that the JBLM population attends) is posted on the JBLM MWR webpage. As of today, all 13 districts have made decisions on how they’ll begin school, and we’ve updated our School Re-Opening Tracker. All Pierce County schools will begin virtually, to include Clover Park School District on JBLM.

JBLM has three school liaison officers who are monitoring all the school district reopening decisions and are planning with the CYS team to determine how we can best support virtual learning for children in our care. The SLO team can be reached at 253-967-7195.

School Age Centers: CYS is working to assess additional capacity for care for School Aged children on JBLM as many districts are expected to begin the school year virtually. We will continue to update on availability. If you will need care for your school-aged child as schools begin virtually, we ask that if you have not had your school-aged child in care before on JBLM, that you go to militarychildcare.com and sign up on the waitlist. This will help us determine the need for care once school begins.

Positive tests at CYS: On Aug. 7, CYS had multiple positive cases confirmed at Beachwood CDC. All were traced back to the same classroom. CYS consulted with Madigan’s Preventative Medicine to determine what actions to take. Staff and families were notified of the appropriate actions required for their safety as well as that of the other children and staff.

Schools & Childcare Facebook live: On Aug. 19, MWR hosted a Facebook Town Hall dedicated to schools and childcare. CYS updated parents on what they know regarding what the remote learning environment will look like in their programs as well as where they are in expanding childcare spaces on base since they are full. Additionally, CYS provided information on options off base to include Child Care Aware of America (https://childcareawarewa.org/) and a new service available through http://militaryonesource.mil, which provides free access to a national online service allowing families to find, hire and pay for hourly, flexible, on-demand care.

Join the CYS Team: The next virtual CYS Hiring Fair is Sept. 15. Apply on http://USAjobs.gov by searching keyword "NAF" and location "98433" and find more information at http://fb.com/JBLMcys. CYS is also looking for Family Child Care Providers. The next orientation is from Sept. 29, 6-8 p.m. at 2013B N. 3rd St. FCC is recruiting for new families to provide care on base, a work-from-career where you can earn up to $2,000 a month. This program increases childcare spaces on JBLM while providing a unique opportunity for spouse employment. As an incentive for families considering this option, there’s a $1,000 bonus, paid in installments, to any NEW FCC provider that opens on JBLM. Additionally, when you PCS and reopen your home at your next installation, there is a $1,000 bonus.
